The issue of personal success for children is pivotal to well being.
I’m sure you couldn’t agree more with me considering the
time and resources we spend on our children. Spending so much of ourselves
simply gives us the right to eagerly expect success. After all, we have left no
stone unturned…..and with children with such high intelligence quotient, success
in life is sure.
However success in the classroom does not automatically
translate to success in real life. As much as high grades are desirable and an
indication of high intelligence quotient, they are not all that is needed for
personal success in the child.
Studies
have shown that Intelligence quotient accounts for only 20% of success. Intelligence
is a measure of genius and genius is not about intellect as most people believe, its
more about the way the brain works.
Emotional quotient on the other hand is how one measures emotional
intelligence. Emotional intelligence describes the ability to perceive, assess
and manage the emotions of oneself and of others.
What are the boundaries for real world success? Is it high
grades alone? I choose to differ. With the Mozart of this world ending up in debt
and so many other examples of exceptional genius who were submerged when faced
with real life problems and concrete issues. I know there is a deeper depth of
knowledge to be sought than the innate and genetic endowment of high intelligence
quotient.
The Bill Gates of this world, Gani Fawehinmi and Wole Soyinka of Nigerian descent
have shown that there is a deeper measure of intelligence than intelligence
quotient alone. It will be wrong to nurture our children to only be theoretical
in their accomplishments rather than becoming practical real world achievers.
The good thing is that the life skills needed to become
practical real world achievers can be learnt. When these skills are combined
with the innate intelligence, it will result in a multidimensional way of
thinking which will ultimately lead to personal success.
The child will be able to think strategically, create
options, take calculated risks, be self aware, self disciplined, have empathy
and make informed decisions in life.
Core Life skills combined with good grades makes a child
exceptional.
Life skills are practical, have to be learnt and practiced
consistently with dedication to make for personal and professional success in
the child.
This is not the duty of the school alone; it is work that
has to be done collectively by both parents and teachers.
It’s time to stretch ourselves more as parents, know and
work with our eager children, pick up needed information from educative
platforms like this blog and build intelligence beyond the walls of the
learning environment in our children.
It’s all about personal success. It’s in your child! Develop
it!!
